We were appointed by Huws Gray to carry out demolition and enabling works at a builders merchants site in Derby. The project involved the removal of a redundant office building located in close proximity to a live railway line, requiring careful planning and coordination.
As part of our nationwide demolition services, we delivered a safe and efficient solution, ensuring all works were fully compliant with rail industry standards and completed without disruption to surrounding operations.
Scope of Works
This project combined soft strip demolition, structural demolition, and site preparation, including:
- Full internal strip-out of the redundant office building.
- Controlled demolition of the structure down to ground level.
- Segregation and removal of demolition arisings.
- Implementation of safety measures due to proximity to live rail infrastructure.
- Delivery of enabling works to prepare the site for future use.
Key Challenges
- Live Rail Environment: The building’s location adjacent to an operational railway required strict safety controls and detailed planning
- Stakeholder Coordination: Close collaboration with rail authorities was essential throughout
- Restricted Working Conditions: Limited working space and access required precise logistics and sequencing
Our Approach
Using our experience in UK demolition and deconstruction services, we developed a controlled and compliant methodology:
- All works were co-ordinated with the Network Rail asset management team to ensure alignment with rail safety requirements.
- Phased demolition approach to maintain structural control and minimise risk.
- Use of appropriate plant and equipment suited to confined and sensitive environments.
- Ongoing monitoring to ensure safety, compliance, and efficiency at every stage.
Outcome
The demolition and enabling works were completed safely, on programme, and without incident. The site was successfully cleared and prepared for redevelopment, with no disruption to the adjacent rail operations.
This project demonstrates our capability to deliver specialist demolition, enabling works, and removal services across the UK, even in high-risk environments such as live rail corridors.
